A Little Yard Work. . .

So, we have a lot of those awesome spider-infested bushes in our backyard.  Since we don't own our own garden (did I never tell that story, remind me to one day) we decided to rip out the hideous bushes and build a terraced-garden.  I'm really excited for it, but since I have no energy lately, I really don't have the motivation to finish it. . .besides the fact that the wonderful neighbor who does own our garden has been really understanding about the 'mis-understanding', and has offered to let us use a portion of that garden this summer, which will be sufficient for my gardening needs.  Needless to say, here is yet another project that we've started, but that we probably won't finish until next year!

Jared got curious about how to get rid of our spider-bushes, and read up on a few different methods online, one of which included just chopping them all down with your big trimmers, and then renting a root-grinder and grinding out all of the roots.  Another suggestion sounded a lot more fun, and A LOT less time consuming, so we tried it and it was AWESOME!!!  We had this whole section done in 1 hour!!!  Here's the process. . .in case you ever want to get rid of your own spider-infested bushes. . .

This is after we had already started, and then realized we should take pictures of our awesome-ness.  So, you see that yellow tow-rope there?  You take one end of that and wrap it around what we were calling a 'root-ball'. . .basically you find a place where the roots are all in a tangly mass, and very difficult to get around, and you try to get it around that.  Yep.  Interestingly, most of these 'root-balls' are at the top of the hill, and the rest of the bushes grow down from there, dipping into the dirt for water, but not really being the root system.

You then take the other end of the aforementioned tow-rope and  hook it to the back of a large vehicle. We tried to use the 4-wheeler, and it just wasn't enough. . .so we brought in the big guns!!!

Now the fun starts!  You slowly, slowly pull forward and put lots of pressure on your $6 tow-rope. . .

A little more. . .

A little more. . .see it starting to rip out?!

And all of a sudden, magically, a ginormous section of your beloved spider-bush pulls right out of the ground!!!

Check it out!!

Yep, that all came out in one piece!!!!

And, then you look back and stand in amazement at how awesome you are for pulling out such a massive thing in about 2 minutes. . .I wasn't looking forward to it, but it actually was a lot of fun.  Makes you feel powerful!

Wow! Amazing how fast that was. Can hardly wait to see how you terrace it, etc. Did the truck dig out the grass tho?

I can't imagine anyone else using this method but you guys. But if I ever have a yard that needs spider bushed removed, I'm copying you.
